Cruiser bikes first originated in America, with Harley-Davidson and Henderson being among the first businesses to create and popularize cruisers.

1.2 The Kawasaki 1500 Mean Streak:

The 1500 Mean Streak debuted in 2002 and was produced for two years before being replaced by the 1600 Mean Streak. This high-performance version of the 1500 Mean Streak featured the same basic engine as the 1500 FI, but it had larger valves, new camshafts, larger fuel injection throttle bodies, new high-compression pistons, and a redesigned combustion chamber. It also had a narrower, slimmer gas tank. This translated to 72 hp at 5500 rpm and 79.7 ft/lbs of torque at 3000 rpm, all while weighing only 637 lbs dry.

The 1500 Mean Streak is the only bike with self-adjusting hydraulic valve lifters, air and damping-adjustable rear suspension, the largest and most powerful front disc brakes, the longest fork travel, and a 27.5-inch seat height.

Performance:

The Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Mean Streak is a fantastic bike in every aspect. Objectively, it produces more horsepower, and handles and brakes better than any other big-bore, V-twin cruiser. Plus, it is available at a comparable price i.e., $10,999.

The main competitor was the Harley-Davidson Softail Deuce, a heavier and more expensive bike. The Deuce could not install the latest rubber wheels due to odd tire sizes (21-inch front laced wheel- the Mean Streak had 17-inch front and rear wheels) and could not brake and handle better than the 1500 Mean Streak.

Subjectively, the 1500 Mean Streak easily outperforms Kawasaki’s advertised “10% improvement in performance” with around 66 HP at the rear wheel (almost 12 times more than a factory, fuel-injected Vulcan 1500). It produces about 20% more horsepower at the rear wheel compared to the standard Vulcan 1500s with fuel injection due to the new engine improvements.

Engineering:

These engine modifications, along with a redesigned, close-ratio transmission, resulted in a bike that accelerated quickly and smoothly with no noticeable dips or peaks in power delivery.

Except for Honda’s VTX1800, the 1500 Mean Streak delivers the best big-bore V-twin cruiser engine performance.

Handling and Braking:

The 1500 Mean Streak shines in terms of handling and braking. It feels far lighter and has more fluid handling compared to other large cruisers. Moreover, the bike is nimble and does not appear heavy once you reach high speeds.
