Jax is the show's main character, not Clay or Gemma, even though both get comparable screen time. He inherits the vice presidency of SAMCRO from his late father, John Teller, and spends the series deciding how much of his father's original vision for the club he can actually restore. Gemma isn't a club member, but she has more influence over SAMCRO than most of the men who are. Tara is a Charming Memorial surgeon and Jax's wife — the character who represents the life Jax keeps almost choosing instead of the club. She's murdered by Gemma at the end of Season 6, in a case of mistaken belief that becomes the engine for most of Season 7's plot.

Opie is Jax's closest friend since childhood and the club's Road Captain. His storyline is largely about what club loyalty costs a family that isn't protected by rank. His father, Piney, and his own life are both eventually spent on the club's behalf. Opie is killed in Season 5.

• Bobby Munson (Mark Boone Junior) - the club's Secretary, later Vice President. Frequently the voice arguing for the club's better instincts, and frequently overruled.
• Chibs Telford (Tommy Flanagan) - a Scottish-born member who rises from Sergeant-at-Arms to Vice President to, by the finale, President, becoming the club's steadiest presence once Clay's authority collapses.
• Tig Trager (Kim Coates) - Sergeant-at-Arms for the first four seasons, and Clay's most loyal enforcer, defined by following orders without questioning them; he steps down from the role in Season 4 after learning what Clay did to Gemma.
• Juice Ortiz (Theo Rossi) - the club's intelligence officer, whose hidden background becomes a secret he can't tell the club, with consequences that build across several seasons.
• Piney Winston (William Lucking) - a founding member and Opie's father, generally the loudest voice for the club's original code. Killed by Clay at the end of Season 4.
• Happy Lowman (David LaBrava) - a Nomad-charter enforcer who appears throughout the series and is promoted to the main cast in Season 7.

• Nero Padilla (Jimmy Smits) - introduced in Season 5, not a club member; runs a legitimate escort business and becomes Gemma's partner. One of the few characters who consistently tries to talk SAMCRO out of its worst decisions.
• Wendy Case (Drea de Matteo) - Jax's first wife and the biological mother of his son Abel. She appears in the pilot, disappears for long stretches, and returns in the final season with a claim on Abel's future the club has to address.
• Wayne Unser (Dayton Callie) - Charming's former police chief, not a club member, but consistently sympathetic to and useful for SAMCRO throughout the series.

The plot mechanics run through one family. John Teller founded SAMCRO and, before his death, wrote a manuscript arguing the club had drifted from what he originally intended it to be. Jax discovers that manuscript early in the series and spends seven seasons deciding how much of it to believe. Clay marrying Gemma after John's death is what makes Clay simultaneously the man who raised Jax and the man Jax eventually has to remove from power. Everything else in the main cast orbits that one relationship.

The core cast changed gradually across the seven seasons, with major shifts usually tied to character deaths, departures, and promotions from recurring roles.

• Season 4 closes the founding era. Clay consolidates power through a cartel alliance, and Jax starts to see how far Clay will go to protect his own position. Clay kills Piney at the end of the season, removing the founding member most openly opposed to him.
• Season 5 introduces Nero, giving Gemma a relationship outside the club for the first time in the series, and ends with Opie's death — a loss the show built an entire episode around.
• Season 6 ends with two of the series' most consequential deaths: Gemma kills Tara, wrongly believing she'd informed on the club to the police, and Jax kills Clay in the finale.
• Season 7 has to run without Clay or Tara. Rather than introduce new characters to fill that space, the show promotes three long-running recurring actors — Drea de Matteo, David LaBrava, and Niko Nicotera — into the main cast.

The Sons of Anarchy cast is reuniting for Legends, a new FX series developed by Charlie Hunnam and Jonathan Groff. • Cut - the sleeveless vest carrying a member's patches. Real clubs use this term too; the show's version — a three-piece patch set with a top rocker, center patch, and bottom rocker — reflects a real, common patch layout.
• Prospect - a person working toward full membership, not yet a patched member. This is a real stage in most real-world clubs, and the show's depiction of prospects doing grunt work for the club is broadly consistent with how the term is generally described.
• Road Captain - the officer responsible for planning routes and leading rides. A real club officer role, used the same way in the show.
• Sergeant-at-Arms - the officer responsible for enforcement and security within the club. Also a real role in real clubs.
• President / Vice President - the club's top two officers, elected roles in both the fictional and real-world sense.
• Nomad - a member not tied to a specific charter, free to move between chapters. This exists in real club structures as well; Happy Lowman's Nomad status in the show reflects that real-world concept.

Sons of Anarchy's cast held together for seven seasons because the show rarely solved a story problem by introducing someone new. It killed off characters the plot required to lose, and it promoted actors who'd already spent years earning the audience's attention rather than bringing in new faces late in the run.
