1. A Brief Background of Honda Valkyrie 1500 Interstate

In 1996, Honda manufactured gigantic heavyweight cruiser motorcycles under the Valkyrie label. Unlike the other cruisers, the Valkyrie models shared their basic engine configuration with the Honda’s Gold Wing Touring lineup. However, Valkyrie’s 1520 cc, water-cooled horizontally opposed flat-six motor went with a smaller displacement. The Valkyrie also received a revised camshaft and a free-flow exhaust system that ensured enhanced engine performance. Another distinguishing feature of the Valkyrie engine is that it has six individual 28 mm carburetors for improved horsepower and peak torque.

In 1997, the first two models of this bike - a Standard model and a Tourer model - were launched in the market.

In 1999, Honda added the 1500 Valkyrie Interstate to the Valkyrie family. The Interstate variants were designated as GL1500CF. The Valkyrie Interstate cruisers were distinct from their predecessors as they featured a larger fuel tank, fork-mounted fairings, and a rear trunk.

The production of this bike continued for three years but was discontinued after 2001. But even after 21 years, the Valkyrie 1500 Interstate garners praise for its power-focused engineering, ample windshield providing weather protection, reliable brakes, maneuverability at all speeds, unique style, and touring comfort.

Over the years, the cruiser did not undergo much change during production. The only reported changes were reflected in the unique colors of the bike.

  • Black/American Red
  • Pearl Sonoma Green/Ocean Gray Metallic

1.2. 2000 Honda Valkyrie GL 1500 CF Interstate

Due to their high demand, the classic black and black with American red color schemes were repeated for the 2000 Valkyrie Interstate models. However, a new color combination was also introduced.

  • Pearl Twilight Silver/Pearl Coronado Blue

1.3. 2001 Honda Valkyrie GL 1500 CF Interstate

For the 2001 Valkyrie 1500 Interstate models, Honda presented exciting color schemes for its bike enthusiasts:

  • Pearl Cheyenne
  • Red/Gloss Black
  • Black/Pearl Beige
  • Black/Gloss Black

2. Honda Valkyrie 1500 Interstate at First Glance

Honda Valkyrie 1500 Interstate at First Glance

One look at the Honda Valkyrie Interstate tends to be enough to convince you to go for a motorcycle tour. This bike screams power, comfort, durability, and riding fun. The brilliant paintwork of the bike looks luxurious against the chrome and gives the bike an elegant look. Polished hollow cast-aluminum wheels not only provide excellent traction but also bring out the “retro character” of the bike.

The gorgeous fork-mounted fairings and wide windscreen are installed to protect you from the harsh elements. Right below the windscreen, a fairing duct is present which reduces low-pressure turbulence and allows a smooth riding experience. For enhanced visibility and a stronger presence, the cruiser is equipped with a stylish 45/45 W halogen twin-headlight. It is encased in chrome and comes with a multi-reflector type lens.

Now let’s look at its engine. The Honda 1500 Valkyrie Interstate owes its success to the high-power, advanced, six-cylinder boxer powerplant. The 1520 cc engine is an awe-inspiring machine that allows for an exceptionally comfortable touring experience.

Even the engine of this bike is a stunner with its well-designed chrome accents. The reshaped headcovers and timing belt covers give the bike a custom-style appeal. The shaft final drive and the screw-and-locknut valve-clearance adjusters are low-maintenance and long-lasting.

The Valkyrie 1500 Interstate has a six-into-six exhaust system with three separate outlet pipes enclosed in a muffler casing on both sides. The engine gets its distinct deep rumble from the six separate exhaust pipes.

The five-speed transmission with close gear ratios ensures greater engine output, faster acceleration, and better fuel economy.

The Valkyrie GL1500 Interstate features a robust diamond frame, large diameter handlebars, and comfortable handle grips for effortless handling.

The 45 mm inverted front forks consist of aluminum triple clamps that increase the rigidity of the fork and provide 4.3 inches of wheel travel. On the other hand, the dual rear shocks with an adjustable spring preload provide 4.7 inches of wheel travel.

Both front and rear disc brakes comprise twin-piston calipers and provide confidence-inspiring stopping power for a fast and safe ride.

The 4.9-liter rear trunk and 35-liter saddlebags are mounted on the bike for packing convenience. The rear trunk has hidden access levers and looks beautiful with twin retro-style chromed tail lights. The 6.9-gallon fuel tank is another touring-friendly feature. With this tank capacity, you can easily travel long distances without taking frequent fuel breaks.

Riding comfort is a huge priority to make long-distance motorcycle rides enjoyable. To ensure a relaxed riding position, Honda Valkyrie Interstate features a firm 28.7-inch rider seat and an accommodating passenger seat with a wide backrest.

The radiator side covers are carefully designed to channel hot air from the engine away from the rider. Moreover, the adjustable vents are installed to direct cool air toward the rider’s legs.

The instrument assembly has a traditional design, an analog speedometer, analog tachometer, fuel level gauge, clock, LCD odometer, and audio displays. The 546-watt alternator and battery provide adequate power for electrical accessories.

5. Aftermarket Parts & Luggage Options for Honda Valkyrie 150 Interstate

The Honda 1500 Valkyrie Interstate is a great touring bike with lots of engine power and touring comfort. The bike also comes with all the necessary touring accessories required to make a motorcycle road trip or camping trip successful.

But there is one little problem. Honda no longer manufactures these beauties. Therefore, we are only left with second-hand options. Sometimes these bikes are in good condition, engine and mechanics considered, but their touring-friendly accessories and specs are worn out.

For example, you may find a well-maintained bike that runs well at a great price, but it has worn-out saddlebags. Or its seats are not as firm as you would like them to be, and they have cracks, rips, and tears. So the question is, should you forgo buying this great bike just because it does not meet your traveling comfort standards?

The answer is highly relative, but we suggest you make that purchase and use the aftermarket parts and luggage options to your advantage.

Installing new seats and saddlebags would not only enhance the comfort of your bike but also upgrade its appearance.

If the finances give you cold feet, don’t worry. There are plenty of economical brands that offer durability and style. VikingBags is one such great option.

Therefore, it is highly recommended you buy your favorite bike and improve its look by adding a pair of hard or soft leather saddlebags to carry your luggage.

The custom rider and passenger seats would greatly improve comfort and allow you to travel long distances without feeling tired. If you can easily afford it, mount sissy bars too. The sissy bars paired with an in-built passenger backrest will allow your partner to have a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
