1. A Brief History of Harley-Davidson Dyna Wide Glide FXDWG
In 1980 Harley-Davidson introduced the Dyna Wide Glide in the Dyna family as FXWG, the Wide Glide represented the typification of Super Glide which was introduced in 1971, with Harley’s factory custom theme.
The FXWG Wide Glide came with a flame paint job fuel tank, a large spaced front fork, and a spoked 21-inch front wheel. This bike gave the chopper looks with its bobbed rear fender, stepped two up-seat, mini-ape hanger handlebars, and forward-mounted controls.
In 1982, the company introduced a lighter and stiffer FXR frame but it was discontinued after 1986 because this frame couldn’t accommodate wide front forks. Then, Harley introduced a new frame on the new model family in 1991 called the Dynas. These frames were able to handle the width of the Wide Glide features and the vehicle was reintroduced as the FXDWG Wide Glide for the 1993 model year. It got the 1,340cc Evolution engine and same custom chopper styling, bobbed rear fender, thin front tire, ape hanger handlebars, and forward-mounted controls.
Later, Harley Davidson gave a new engine, the 1,450cc, air-cooled Twin Cam 88, in 1999, and afterward, the changes and improvements were applied to this motorcycle with every passing year.
In 1999 the company also began Custom Vehicle Operation (CVO) program, these are the vehicles that were produced in limited quantities with specially made accessories and different paint jobs. The CVO operation was continued from 2001 to 2002 model years.
In 2004, there was a fuel injection option added to this production. FXDWG had carburetors while FXDWGI models came with fuel injection.
In 2006 the 49mm front forks of Harley Wide Glide were raked out to 36 degrees. This year, Harley-Davidson also introduced the cruise drive with six-speed transmission.
In 2007, Fuel injection came as standard in Wide Glide, and the big twin got even bigger with the introduction of the 1584cc, air-cooled, Twin Cam 96 engine.
Harley-Davidson celebrated its 105th anniversary in 2008. This year Harley introduced a special limited-edition model of Wide Glide. This model came with a two-tone Anniversary Copper and Vivid Black paint job. This model was unique, and it has gold and pale stripings with anniversary badges. After that, the company retired the Wide Glide, but not for too long.
2010 was the comeback year of the Wide Glide. After two years Wide Glide returns with a powerful and boosted engine, (the 1,1690cc, fuel-injected, air-cooled Twin Cam 103).
