When riders need a bit of extra storage room on their motorcycle, finding the right set of luggage compartments can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. While some motorcycle luggage rack bags may fit all of the rider's belongings easily, they might be a bit of a burden when positioned on the motorcycle. Tail bags, however, fit conveniently behind the rider on the very tail end of the motorcycle, making sure that mobility on the bike is a high priority. Viking manufactures the motorcycle tail bags featured in this section of our website, so you know you're getting premium quality construction and long-lasting durability with every model.
How to choose a motorcycle tail bag
A tail bag sits on your passenger seat, sissy bar, or luggage rack and gives you removable storage without drilling or permanent mounting. The right one depends on three things: how much you carry, what your bike can mount to, and how often you ride in the rain.
Capacity. Small bags suit a day ride with a jacket liner and tools. Medium bags handle a weekend. Extra-large bags carry clothing for several days, but they differ in shape, so check length, height, and opening size, not liters alone. Always compare packed and expanded dimensions.
Mounting. Most Viking tail bags strap to a sissy bar, and we recommend a sissy bar at least 24 inches high for secure mounting. If your bike has none, a sissy bar bag or a luggage rack setup may be the better route. Check the product page for strap measurements before ordering.
Weather. Our bags are weather resistant, not waterproof. Use a rain cover or dry liner for long wet rides.
Tail bag, saddlebags, tank bag, or backpack?
A tail bag is one piece of a luggage setup. Rear storage is easy to add and remove, while motorcycle saddlebags add lower, more permanent capacity at the sides. A tank bag keeps a phone, wallet, and map within reach. If you want a bag you can carry off the bike, compare our motorcycle backpacks, and read our guide to backpack vs tail bag for a fuller comparison.
