1. A Brief History of Honda 750 Shadow Aero
Society first saw the Honda Shadow back in 1983 when it started being produced and referred to as the “VT750C.’’ It was a middleweight cruiser and has a round headlamp, instrument casings, and chromed front fender while the painted pieces were in black or a candy wineberry red color.
Back in the beginning, Honda was into the performance of cruisers, so the engine that was used in the first model was a liquid-cooled, 749 cc V-twin, SOHC, three-valved with a shaft drive and six-gear transmission. However, shortly after its release, the U.S. implemented import limits on Japanese motorcycles with engines larger than 700 ccs.
In 1984, when the U.S. increased tariffs on imports from Japan, Honda found itself needing to downsize the displacement to under 701 ccs and call the bike the VT700C Shadow. The V-twin engine now displaced 694 ccs and had twin-plug cylinder heads and hydraulic valve adjusters. Also, the bike was upgraded with a dual disk brake system.
In 1985, the engine configuration and cylinder capacity remained the same while the bike carried on with only a candy glory red color scheme, replacing the previous candy Scorpio red.
In 1986, the company revised the riding position with the control moved towards the front. The 10-spoke cast-aluminum wheels were reduced to a five-spoke design and the front braking system only featured a single disc brake. Also, the engine was now polished instead of black painted. But in 1998, the company introduced the all-new ACE 750, a motorcycle built around an ACE engine with a larger two-into-one exhaust, single crank, chain drive, and retro looks. This formula was to be continued until 2003 without any major changes.
In 2004, the 750 Ace was to be phased out in favor of the 750 Aero: a more modern machine that replaced the old 34 mm carburetor with twin 36 mm carburetors, although the engine remained the same. For the 750 Aero, the shaft drive takes the place of the chain final drive, suspensions were stiffened, and the rear tire was smaller. The Aero added 14 lbs to the overall weight, but it appeared to be the ideal bike for Honda to continue producing with few adjustments till now.
