Triumph Speedmaster Motorcycle Saddlebags Guide

Triumph Speedmaster Motorcycle Saddlebags Guide

If you’re like a lot of Triumph Speedmaster owners, you bought this ride because it has an attitude about it. In Triumph’s own sales brochure, they state that “some bikes are more sociable than others. The Speedmaster isn’t one of them.” The Speedmaster takes a low stance, puts your feet forward and dares anyone to say anything about it.

If you already own or are ready to own the Speedmaster, a next important step will be choosing gear for your bike. We’re fairly certain you’ll want saddlebags that support the bike’s attitude and we’ve seen some pretty crappy bags on the market, but it’s up to you.

We understand that you might feel it a little overwhelming when trying to decide but we can help you narrow down your search with these 4 choices.

Do you want a little shine to match the chrome on your Speedmaster? Would you prefer a more stripped-down bag without the flashy chrome all over? How do you feel about buckles? Would you like the option of where your bags open?

How much gear do you need to store? Do you need this for your daily commute or do you plan on taking longer trips?

Viking Bags has our own designed key which makes it easy to secure your bags. Maybe you don’t need your bags to lock? If so, we have options for you there as well.

Do you want a permanent solution to your bags or would you prefer something more temporary?

Bags come in a variety of different styles. Most riders will want the bags that will match best with their bike. The majority of our bags come in two styles, plain or studded. If your bike already has studs, you can keep the theme going by adding a pair of Studded Saddlebags. All Viking Bags studs are rust proof, polished, and stainless steel. Non-studded or Plain bags are very clean themselves and can keep the clean look throughout.

Plain VS. Studded

The Speedmaster already carries plenty of attitude, but you can also addStudded bags for some extra curb appeal. These studded bags go perfect with your bike if you already have the studded seat. On the other hand, you may prefer smooth and Plain texture with clean lines that aren’t broken by anything but the wind. Either way, we have the right bag for you and your bike.

buckle vs. nobuckle

Another style design element decision is whether or not to have buckles on your saddlebags. Again, if you are looking for a sleek, smooth and fast appearance, you might opt out of buckles. We have plenty of saddlebags that do not offer the buckles, keeping your ride sleek. Take a look at our Warriorbag for the no buckle look. That being said, buckles won’t detract from the Speedster’s overall “don’t tread on me” message and if you want those you should check out our Side Pocket Saddlebag

Although some Speedster owners will opt for the Quick Disconnect System (QDS), there are also two other saddlebag options to consider.

You may want to purchase a Shock Cut-Out bag. These bags follow the design set out by Triumph when originally manufacturing the Speedster by allowing the bag to surround the rear shocks. The only possible downside of the Shock Cut-Out is that you will lose a bit of capacity. However, this bag design also gives the saddlebags the look of having come from the factory.

Alternatively, you can also choose the smoother look of a Plain Back saddlebag. Plain Back bags will obviously increase the lateral profile of your ride, but some owners choose this “slim up front and wide in the rear” look.

You can use the QDS to offset the bag a bit, giving it a look similar to the Shock Cut-Out without losing capacity. This option can deliver the best of both worlds because they don’t lose capacity, but still maintain a thin profile.

If you’re not sure which design you want, you can always call us and we’ll work through the options for working with or around your rear shocks.

Hard VS. Soft

We also offer bags that are completely blacked out without any buckle. Take a look at our Warrior and Spear bags. They are two options for bags that have no shiny buckles or studs.

One of your first decisions will be how much stuff you want to carry when you ride. If you’re going to meet friends for a drink or two, capacity isn’t particularly important. This changes if you are planning road trips. With our variety of choices, you can choose the minimalist or maximum capacity bag.

Many Speedmaster owners return to us after the initial choice so they can order a second larger or smaller capacity bag. The reality is that you’ll use your Speedmaster for lots of riding situations. So, why not have two bag choices ready and waiting?

Some owners want the ability to grab and go with their saddlebags. Others like to leave their bags to stay with their bike. We believe that security is an important consideration when selecting your saddlebags. But, we have you covered in any event. We provide a padlock ring so you can always add a key or combination lock for additional security without an additional expense. We also install locks on all of our products. Some are visible and others are under the buckle, especially important if you’re going for a sleek profile for your Speedmaster.

The other key component to saddlebag security is what you want to do with your bags when you aren’t riding.

Our customers love that we include factory matching bolts with all of our saddlebag mounting kits because it saves them a trip to the store. Of course, if you have added custom details to your Speedmaster, you may need to match bolts at your favorite tool store. If you have a hardware or other question, just ring our customer service staff. We promise that they’ll use over one hundred years of experience riding in the wind to give you the best possible answer.

Choices, choices, everywhere!!! You can even choose from 3 installation methods for your new Speedmaster saddlebags from Viking.

Our three install kits are:

1- Quick Disconnect System (QDS)
2- Hard Mount Kit
3- Throw Over Kit

The only bad choice you can make here is no choice. Each installation type is designed to give you exactly the security and mobility you want for your saddlebags with as little fuss as possible.

1. Quick Disconnect system
2. Hard mount kit
3. Throw over kit

Speedmaster owners are raving about our Quick Disconnect System (QDS). By combining the takeaway ability of our Throw Over mount with the security and stability of our Hard Mount, the QDS is the best choice for riders who are certain that their saddlebag security will often be a game-time decision.

For an extra fee, the Quick Disconnect System is designed to mount in the space where shocks and tail lights aren’t. As an upside, the QDS allows riders to mount their bags away from the bike’s body without losing capacity to a Shock Cutout bag.

With our QDS, you can quickly remove your saddlebags from your Speedmaster. You can then throw your bags over your shoulder as you stroll through that swap meet or tavern. But, when your bags are attached to the QDS, you can be sure that your bags will stay in place for as long as you want them to.

QDS is also a bit shy, so you will barely notice the mounts even when your saddlebags aren’t on your bike.

When your new Viking saddlebags arrive, don’t be surprised when you open the box and see that we packed a Hard Mount kit inside. We’re not sure why other bag sellers don’t include a mount, but we think it’s a sign that they’ve never ridden a Triumph.

Hard Mount users still account for the majority of our saddlebag owners, but QDS is catching up fast and motorcycle purists still opt for Throw Over. Whichever mount you choose, you’ll enjoy the ride.

Viking Bags understands that not all Speedmaster owners want or need a permanent storage solution. We have a throw over option for our bags that utilizes a simple yoke and frame system. Simply throw the bags over, secure them using the yoke underneath the seat and strap them down to the metal frame. This is the best option for Marauder owners who need a simple and economical way to store their belongings or for those owners who have fitment issues with the other mounting options we offer. The throw over option is only available on our smaller bags that do not need to the extra support of one of our more permanent mounting solutions.
