Yamaha Virago Motorcycle Saddle Bag Guide
INFORMATION TO HELP CHOOSE THE RIGHT OPTIONS FOR VIRAGO SADDLEBAGS
One of the earliest mass-produced motorcycles with a mono-shock rear suspension, the Virago was Yamaha’s first V-twin cruiser motorcycle. It was first sold in 1981 with a 750 cc (46 cu in) engine, but Yamaha soon added 500 cc (31 cu in) and 900 cc (55 cu in) versions. Redesigned in 1984, the Virago switched from a rear mono-shock to a dual-shock design as well as having an added tear-drop shaped gas tank. Today, despite some starter and other easily remedied issues, Virago bikes are known for their exceptional comfort, powerful brakes, excellent range, refined handling, and balanced performance.
With a classic bike like the Virago, here at Viking Bags, we want to offer you a wide variety of style and storage options that will give you every opportunity to be on the road in comfort and style. Whether you want straightforward storage or a little more panache, we have the right bags for you.
We feel it is important for all customers to understand four crucial dynamics when choosing bags for your Virago
Do you like to turn people’s heads as you ride by or do you prefer a little less attention? Do you want to compliment the classic look of the Virago? Would you like buckles, studs or just a plain, sleek look to your bags? Would you like options as to how your bags open?
How much storage do you need? A week? Two? Maybe you need enough to store gear for work as part of your commute?
Do you need your bags to lock or not? Viking Bags are easily secured with our own innovative Viking Bags key, which is unique to only our bag systems.
Are you looking to permanently mount your bags? Would you prefer a less permanent option?
Bags come in a variety of different styles. Most riders will want the bags that will match best with their bike. The majority of our bags come in two styles, plain or studded. If your bike already has studs, you can keep the theme going by adding a pair of Studded Saddlebags. All Viking Bags studs are rust proof, polished, and stainless steel. Non-studded or Plain bags are very clean themselves and can keep the clean look throughout.
Plain VS. Studded
Yamaha Virago bags come in a variety of options and styles. Whether you’re considering a classic motorcycle look or a less traditional one, Viking Bags provides both studded and plain bags to give you the most choice for your dollar. We designed our bags with the rider in mind, and we think you deserve fantastic options when trying to create that storage, fitment and look you want for your ride. Our studded bags, with rustproof, polished stainless steel, will give you that classic cruiser look. If studs are not for you, however, our plain-faced bags with chrome buckles offer the same storage options while maintaining a streamlined look without all the flash. For all the riders out there who don’t want chrome at all, we also offer basic black bags in our Warrior andSpearmodels without any chrome or studs.
BUCKLE VS. NO BUCKLE
Sometimes less is more. If you’re looking for bags with style but without unnecessary flash, we also offer bags with clean designs that offer the use of buckles or not. The Spear and Warrior model bags provide you with storage and security without buckles or shine, just simple, clean black design. With all these choices to add storage and style to your Virago, we also offer a final option of a plain back or our shock cut out option.
STANDARD BAGS VS. SHOCK CUT OUT BAGS
Our standard Virago bags are the easiest on the wallet and are typically mounted between the rear shock and rear turn signals. If you need a greater storage capacity and decide on a larger sized bag, it might be necessary to utilize a kit to relocate your rear turn signals. Consider our Quick Disconnect System: it is the perfect option for the Virago owner because it mounts the bags to the outside of the shock. In this case, customers who utilize our QDS system will not need the Shock Cut Out option available on our bags.
If you do, however, wish to mount your bags around the shocks, our Shock Cut Out bags are custom molded to fit neatly around the perimeter of the shock. Although a more costly option, this keeps the bags tighter to the fender, offering you a sleek, streamlined look that’s well worth the added cost. Storage may be sacrificed here to a small degree, but Viking Bags has a variety of storage capacity options to best fit your needs.
Hard VS. Soft
We also offer bags that are completely blacked out without any buckle. Take a look at our Warrior and Spear bags. They are two options for bags that have no shiny buckles or studs.
As the world’s largest manufacturer of saddlebags, Viking Bags has the unique ability to provide bike owners with a large variety of style and storage options. With so many options (over 200!) ranging from small to extra-large, we know it can be a little overwhelming to choose the right bag for your bike, so we’ve made it easy to narrow down your choices with our easy to use filter. You can choose price, size, and bag style by selecting or deselecting these options on the navigation bar on the left side of our website
Once you’ve selected the perfect style to complement your Virago, Viking Bags also wants to offer you the best option for securing your items. We offer two separate locking options on our bags: Option 1 allows users to lock the bags from the top; Option 2 offers bags that lock under the buckles. You can also padlock most of our bags for added security. Using the QDS system also offers some supplemental security by allowing riders to detach bags and bring them inside. If you’re looking for non-locking bags, we have bags to fulfill that need as well—we do recommend that you not keep any valuable items in non-locking bags overnight with this option.
You may not have thought much about how to mount your saddlebags. There are three main choices when it comes to mounting hardware. There is a hard mount -- which means your bags won’t come off without a wrench -- and a Quick Disconnect System mount, which allows you to remove your bags on the road without tools and keep them with you. The third option is a throw-over mount. These mounting options offer different types of security, so think about how you’ll use these bags when choosing the best mounting system for your needs.
1- Quick Disconnect System (QDS)
2- Hard Mount Kit
3- Throw Over Kit
Our Quick Disconnect System does exactly what it says – it is designed to be removed and reattached easily and with little fuss. QDS is a little more expensive than other mounting hardware; it’s $114.99 through Viking Bags’ website, but we suspect you’ll find that the extra investment will help immensely when it comes to convenience. Security is a good reason to choose the QDS as well; in areas where bags that are left on a bike can be a target for criminals, the best defense may be removing the bags. Sometimes the deciding factor will be that QDS lets you fit a plain back bag that might otherwise interfere with a bike’s shocks or other hardware – QDS sets the bags slightly away from the bike’s body. This is why we suggest this kit not be used with Shock Cut-Out bags; the shock cut-out isn’t needed as it will be far enough away from the shock to not need it.
There is one last important benefit with this mounting kit: when the bags are disconnected from the bike, only a few small docking posts remain to show that the bags were ever there. That means you can convert your bike for various riding needs, pretty much immediately, and swap back again when needed.
The Hard Mount kit is included as our standard mounting kit with all Viking Bags purchases. If you’re looking to permanently mount a set of bags on your bike, this option is for you. Compared to the QDS system, the Hard Mount option is the strongest of all our mounting options. This option is still easily removable—you can disconnect the two bolts on each side of the mount for when you wish to clean, maintain, or store your bags.
For those who want the option of throwing bags over the fender when they’re needed or leaving them at home when they’re not, Viking Bags has you covered. The Throw Over kit uses a simple yoke system that attaches under the seat and secures to the temporary frame that easily mounts to the rear fender. This is a cost effective storage option and also a useful option for Virago owners with fitment issues. Keep in mind that this kit is only available on our smaller capacity bags, of which do not need a more solid mount.
