Harley-Davidson Softail Saddlebag

Harley-Davidson® Softail Saddlebag

The Harley-Davidson Softail model has a lot of styling cues from the “hardtail” choppers from the 60’s and 70’s. The Softail has its own very unique profile on the road and you will look great riding it. There are many different trims of the Softail and they’re all instant classics. You have the classic Fat Boy, the Fat Boy Lo, the Backline, the Softail Deluxe, the Heritage Classic, the Softail Slim, the Standard, the Springer, the Custom, the Cross Bones, the Night Train, the Deuce and the Breakout. All Softails give you that relaxed riding position so you charge the road ahead of you. In addition, each trim has its own specific characteristics because no two Softails are alike. Viking Bags took these factors into account in the designing process and created several bags that would fit every rider’s needs. Such beautiful motorcycles are meant to be ridden. We’ve come up with several different bags to fit the demand of most riders; commuters, weekend warriors, and the adventurers. Depending on what your needs are Viking Bags has the bag for you.

Studded or plain? Buckles or no buckles? Opening towards the bike or towards the front? Over the shock or behind the shock?

Do you need to carry a lot of gear on your rides? We have several saddlebag sizes.

Some of our bags have locks, each with an individual key.

Do you want something permanently installed on your bike or do you want the comfort of having a quick release?

Before installing the saddlebags on your Softail please make sure both sides fit as you will need enough room on the brake side to clear the exhaust and enough room on the clutch side to clear your belt guard. If you need to purchase a Turn Signal Relocation Kit, you can do this on our website.

Plain VS. Studded

Bags come in a variety of different styles. Most riders will want the bags that will match best with their bike. The majority of our bags come in two stylesplain or Studded. If your bike already has studs, you can keep the theme going by adding a pair of studded saddlebags. You can find both of our Softail plain & studded bags on our website. All Viking Bags studs are rust proof, polished, and stainless steel. Non-studded or plain bags are very clean themselves and can keep the clean look throughout.

buckle vs. nobuckle

We also offer bags that are completely blacked out without any buckle. Take a look at our Warrior and Cross Bones bags. They are two options for bags that have no shiny buckles or studs.

Shock Cut Out Bags have a rounded mold on the front corner of the bag that all room for the bag to fit over the shock. You will want the bags to be snug to the bike to give it a very clean and custom look. The prices are a little higher but the look and fit have a very custom style as if the bags were made for the bike. The capacity of the bag will be slightly less than its counterpart due the indent in the bag and it may be a little harder to get certain items in over where the shock is, but we have made up for that with several bigger bags from you to choose from. Browse through our selection.

Our Standard Bagsfor the Dyna will save you a little on price in most cases, they are typically mounted behind the shock but in front of the turn signals. On the bigger bags, the size of the bags may extend farther back and a turn signal relocation will most likely be necessary. If you chose to get a bigger bag, the ideal thing to do is to use our quick disconnect system as it will push the bag just outside the shock.

Hard VS. Soft

We also offer bags that are completely blacked out without any buckle. Take a look at our Warrior and Spear bags. They are two options for bags that have no shiny buckles or studs.

At Viking Bags we carry over 200 styles and sizes of saddlebags alone making us the largest saddlebags manufacturers in the whole world. We have different sizes, small, medium, large, and extra-large. Not sure what size to get? Don’t worry, we’ve made it easy for you to pick your size with our size filter. Pick your price point, size, bag style, backside, and even the type of mount you want and we’ll tell you which one is the one for you.

Security is relative to the rider himself, what one person may consider secure another might now. Having a locking bag is ideal for multiple reasons and just about every rider no matter the preference. We have locks that are placed in two different locations. You can choose bags that have the locks on top, like the one pictured below, or you can choose a bag that has the lock under the buckle. Simply lift the buckle to expose the lock. Moreover, most of our bags also have a spot to pad lock the bag for additional peace of mind. If you’re really worried about your bags, you can always add our QDS system and quickly take off the bags when you reach your destination. If you’re looking for a more inexpensive alternative, we also sell non-locking bags.

Now that you have decided which bag will fit your bike better the next step is to choose the right mounting hardware.

There are 3 types of mounting hardware’s available to you and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

1- Quick Disconnect
2- Hard Mount
3- Throw Over

1. Quick Disconnect system
2. Hard mount kit
3. Throw over kit

Our Quick Disconnect System (QDS) allows you to take bags off from your motorcycle in a matter of seconds. The Quick Disconnect System costs $114.99 on our website but the convenience alone is worth the upgrade. The best thing about this kit is that it leaves very little when not connected, only 2 small docking posts that are hard to notice. We would suggest this kit only if you are buying the plain back saddlebags as opposed to shock cut out saddlebags. With the shock cut out bags, the shock cut out no longer needed because the shock is no longer a fitment issue. You can gain some capacity by sticking with the plain back bags instead of the shock cut out bags.

rc dyna hard mount brackets

Viking Bags offers a hard mount kit for free with the purchase of any saddlebag from our website. We always include standard bolts for your manufacturer but may need different bolts on specific models. In such cases, the costs of said bolts should not exceed than a couple of dollars at your local hardware store. Providing free mounting hardware is not the standard in the saddlebag industry and we do this for all of our bags, unfortunately we cannot carry every specific bolt for every model because the combinations can easily go into the hundreds. The hard mount method is by far the most popular way of installing our bags. One installed, you can rest assured that they’re not easily coming off while riding.

Throw over brackets are a convenient way to go. The throw over kit allows you to take the bags off from your bike in less than 5 minutes. Chrome brackets are left on your bike after removal of the bags, this makes it easier to install bags again. If you have any questions regarding the installation process please give us a call, we have over 100 years of collective motorcycle experience and would love to answer any questions.

A closer look at the various models will entail why you cannot simply get a generic accessory for your bike. If you have the Super Glide, Wide Glide or Street Bob model you will definitely need a turn signal relocation kit while the others may or may not need it. If you opt for a throw over saddle you will need a back seat. For the Dyna you will need to check the fit and space on each side for one will have to clear the exhaust while the other will have provide room to clear the belt guard. If you don’t want to opt for the Quick Disconnect System you will be advised to go for the shock cut out or slanted bags.
