If you are a Harley lover then you will be well aware of the Dyna Glide family. These bikes are the pure embodiment of the Harley spirit.

Any Harley Davidson motorcycle that wears the name Dyna has plenty of attitudes built-in.

The Super Glide motorcycles have maintained a class of their own. They are one of the most commonly recognized motorcycles in the world.

Harley super glides are a throwback to the golden days of having a custom chopper. Undoubtedly, it’s a classic through and through.

Back then, Harley Davidson introduced two bikes in the Dyna Super Glide category. The base model and the custom model.

Both the models didn’t fail to make a fine impression among the riders. This motorcycle had come to meet the demands of riders who were not satisfied with the previous models.

1. Background of Harley Super Glide Motorcycles

There was a high trend of riders customizing their motorcycles back in the 1970s. Just, as usual,  Harley decided to give what the people were looking for in their rides.

That’s where Harley launched the first FX Super Glide back in 1971. It was widely considered as the first factory custom motorcycle produced by Harley Davidson.

The 1971 Super Glide model was not an immediate success for Harley. They only sold about 4,500 units that year.

A major reason behind it was the fiberglass rear fender which seemed like a boat tail.

Then in 1972,  Harley switched the fiberglass fender with a metallic one. Luckily, it became popular among the riders and the sales were also improved.

Later in 1974, Harley Davidson introduced the Super Glide FXE edition. They added an electric starter feature to this bike.

At that time, Harley also introduced some limited-edition motorcycles in the Super Glide category. These were Confederate Super Glide and Confederate edition of the Super Glide FXE.

The Confederate editions had metallic gray paint, a rebel flag on their fuel tank as well as a general’s sleeve braid decal on the front fender.

There were only 560 total units that were produced which makes them one of the rarest Harley Davidsons.

Moving onto 1982, the year which brought an innovation in the Super Glide category.

Harley launched the Super Glide II. These bikes had a stiffer and much lighter frame. Harley also introduced a rubber-mounted engine to minimize vibrations in this model.

Later on, the simple FX model was discontinued and Super Glide II became simply the Super Glide. In the last years of the 1980s, the sales of this model also began to decline significantly as riders needed something more innovative.

1.2. The Launch of Harley Dyna Super Glide

So, this finally brings us to 1991 when Harley introduced a new frame to their motorcycle family. The Dyna line-up was started.

The Dyna bikes had a more stiff frame than the previous motorcycles. It only had two rubber mounts to control vibration because the frame only had a slight vibration at high speed.

The sales of Super Glide FXR models continued for four more years till 1995 when the new Dyna FXD Super Glide replaced the FXR model.

The 1999 Dyna Super Glide came with Twin Cam 88 engine. It had the capacity of generating 1,450cc and almost 67 horsepower at 5,400rpm.

The sports model of Dyna Super Glide was also launched in 1999. This Dyna came with triple-disc brakes and flat handlebars.

To meet the needs of people who like to go on adventures, a touring edition of the Super Glide was introduced known as FXDX-T Dyna Super Glide.

Later in 2004, the Dyna Super Glide FXDLI was invented. The ‘I’ stands for fuel injection as these models introduced a fuel-injection system.

The year 2006 marked the 35th anniversary of the vintage 1971 Super Glide FX. To celebrate its 35th anniversary, Harley introduced the limited-edition FXD135 Dyna Super Glide. Almost 3,000 units of the anniversary model were produced.

The Year 2007 was the last year for Dyna Super Glide. The new engine was 1,5844cc Twin Cam 96 air-cooled.

The Dyna Super Glide FXD was discontinued in 2010.

2. Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide FXD Buyers Guide

The process of buying a new or used motorcycle is never simple. It takes a lot of time, patience, experience, and sometimes even a bit of luck to find a perfect bike for you.

Knowing what you are looking for, which type of motorcycle goes well with your needs, and how to haggle can help you in finding the right bike at the best price.

If you are planning to buy a Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide then here is a brief buyer guide to help you in making the right decision.

2.1 How Reliable is The Harley Davidson Dyna Super Glide Engine?

The Harley Davidson Super Glide FXD is the last member of the Dyna family. It comes with Twin Cam 96 (1585cc) engine. The engine produces a maximum torque of 106 Nm at 2900rpm.

This air-cooled engine produces a maximum peak power output of 68HP. With this engine, the Dyna Super Glide can reach up to a top speed of 105 mph.
If you are a veteran rider and can handle high power output then the Dyna Super Glide engine can be a go for you.

As the engine performance is not only defined through speed and power, it has an electronic sequential port fuel injection system that is better for fuel consumption. In previous models, a fuel injection induction system was given.

Just as all the Harleys with Twin Cam 96 engines, if regular maintenance is done stable and consistent performance can be maintained. Generally speaking, the fuel-injected engines are easier to live with than the carbureted ones.

2.2 Is Dyna Super Glide a Good First Bike?

If you have never ridden a motorcycle over 500cc then you should not go with the Harley Dyna Glide. The reason is quite simple: controlling such a powerful engine displacing over 1585cc could be a challenge for any beginner.

But, if you have been into Harleys for quite some time and now you are looking to buy a motorcycle for yourself then Dyna Super Glide can be a good first bike for you.

The Harley Dyna Glide is not very fast but delivers exceptional power. It delivers sound and vibrations that only a Harley Davidson motorcycle can provide.

2.3 Is The Dyna Super Glide Reliable?

According to surveys, more than 70% of the Harleys built in the 90s are still on the road today. So, we can say that all the Harleys including Dyna Super Glide are really reliable.

A common reason why Harley Davidson experiences fewer sales is that the riders don’t think of upgrading their bike as they enjoy riding them for a long time.

In the words of some veteran riders, if the Dyna Super Glide is properly maintained and responsibly driven then it can be driven for the first forty thousand miles without any worries.

2.4 What Kind of Primary Oil Do I Need for a Dyna Super Glide?

If you have not made any modifications and have the standard clutch plates then any synthetic engine oil 20W50 can work for your engine. However, some clutch manufacturers require non-synthetic oil so, make sure which clutch plates you are using.

2.5 Is The Dyna Super Glide Comfortable for Road Trips?

The Super Glide FXD is perfectly capable of cruising comfortably at steady speeds. Shifting action is smooth and accurate, Harley redesigned the clutch to require almost 30% less squeeze to engage.

Some riders complain about the total lack of wind protection and the different appearance of the mid-mounted foot controls. But, these problems don’t really matter for the majority of the riders.

Moreover, you can always add an aftermarket windshield with the bike and some dope saddlebags if you are planning to go on a trip.

The cruise control works perfectly fine and the motorbike is immune to crosswinds while going at a high speed. All these features make the Dyna Super Glide a comfortable bike for Road Trips.
