Motorcycle Saddlebags Evolution

Motorcyclists rely on quality luggage when traveling on a motorcycle while transporting personal items. The most common source of transport is motorcycle saddlebags. These bags are specifically designed for motorcycles, and they range in sizes, design, colors and mounting technique. The two major techniques used to mount motorcycle saddlebags are: throw-over or hard-mount.

Throw-over saddlebags were first introduced in the 1950 but their design was minimal because manufactures did not have access to today’s technological advances. After the Vietnam War the motorcycle industry experienced a big boom in sales. This encouraged saddlebag manufactures to develop high-quality bags that could withstand long voyages. This, however, was developed by motorcyclists themselves. Due to their constant traveling, they began to drill holes into their bikes and saddlebags developing a revolutionary way to mount their bags. This became a fast moving trend among motorcyclists that resulted in a permanent installation solution that changed the motorcycle luggage industry. When the motorcycle industry took notice of this sudden trend, they began to manufacture bikes with struts. This allowed motorcyclists to bolt on the saddlebags without having to make permanent changes that could in fact cause damage to the motorcycle. Later, motorcycles were equipped with similar features such as sissy bars and motorcycle carriers. Other accessories could also be securely attached to these features. In the following years, motorcyclists began to put forth interest in purchasing motorcycle saddlebags that had aesthetic appeal. Retailers began to add fashionable studs, buckles and designs that gave each bag a unique appearance.
